CAD Layout and Panel Cutting Services
* These services are provided in cooperation with Ross Schlotthauer at Experimental Air

Instrument Panel CAD Layout Package - $125

Ross will take your design and layout your panel electronically using computer aided drafting (CAD) so that you are guaranteed to get the panel you want.

He'll start with a precise drawing of your blank panel and then insert all the instruments you specify. All instruments and holes will be drawn to scale so you can see exactly how your panel and instruments will fit. When the layout is finalized, he'll send you a set of detailed drawings that contain exact positions and sizes for every hole.

Additionally, He can have your panel waterjet cut by a computer numerically controlled (CNC) machine and save you the time, trouble, and expense of cutting it out yourself.  More information on this below.

The process is simple...

  1. Layout your panel using the Panel Builder.

  2. Then go to "My Projects" on the navigation bar, find the project you wish to request this service for and click on "Request Collaborator" ...a form will appear on the page.

  3. Complete the form selecting "CAD Package" from the drop down list and then click "Submit Request".

  4. Your request will be sent to Ross at Experimental Air and you will be contacted shortly thereafter.

The ePanel Builder collaboration tool will allow you and Ross to work on your panel design together to ensure you know exactly what you are getting.

Once the panel design is complete, work will start on your drawing package (like the 4 drawing package shown here) which can also be used to cutout your panel.

Instrument Panel Waterjet Cutting - $140 + shipping

Once your panel has been laid out precisely in CAD, it is very easy to have it waterjet cut.  By doing this, you are guaranteed to get a perfect panel with no hassles.  Of course we know most homebuilder love tools, and wouldn't mind dropping $130 for an instrument hole punch, but why hassle with it.  Ross can cut any shape including compound curves.  You can see an example of a precision fit in the VSI picture below.

Ross will simply email your layout to his local machine shop where they turn the CAD file into a computer aided machining (CAM) file which their CDC machine can interpret.  The bulk of the expense to have a panel CDC cut is in programming the machine.  By sending the shop a good CAD file, most of the work is already done and very little manual programming is required.  That is why his cost (and in turn your cost) is so low.

* The instrument panel waterjet cutting service also requires the CAD layout Package above.  To order, follow the instructions below.

  1. Go to "My Projects" on the navigation bar, find the project you wish to request these services for and click on "Request Collaborator" ...a form will appear on the page.

  2. Complete the form selecing "CAD and Waterjet Cutting Package" from the drop down list and then click "Submit Request".

  3. Your request will then be sent to Ross at Experimental Air and you will be contacted shortly thereafter.

  4. The process continues by you shipping your blank panel to Experimental Air.  If you don't have the panel yet, you can also have your kit manufacturer drop ship it.  Ross can also make panels from scratch if necessary.

Panels are usually cut and shipped back to you in about a week.
